Funding the Green Valley House project

September 2021

The race to fully renovate Green Valley House (the former Green Valley Clinic) began as soon as we hired our new facilities manager, Nate Howman. Nate and his family were moving from Kentucky to take on this new role, and onsite housing was needed. For their first few months in Virginia, we only had temporary housing to offer them. They stayed mostly in Dogwood Cottage until the Green Valley House apartment was completed in early June. They now have a beautiful two-bedroom home for their family of three, complete with a utility room and plenty of storage. The Howmans love their new home and are so grateful for the built-in storage and attention to detail provided by Troyer Construction.

Green Valley House is more spacious than it looks; after completing the Howman residence, there is still more than 2000 square feet of building to be finished. When complete, the remaining space will provide a versatile staff or volunteer residence with two separate bedroom areas and a spacious kitchen, dining, and living area. This larger part of the building could provide communal housing for several couples or individuals, or perhaps serve as a four-bedroom family residence.

While the project is more than 55% funded, we needed to suspend progress in July while we worked to secure a long-term loan for the balance. The most complicated parts of the overall renovation were done before the Howmans settled in: framing, drywall, insulation, HVAC, electric, and plumbing. Now, in our slower season, we can focus on completing the project. Much of the work that remains is less technical and can be done by staff and volunteers: painting walls and trim; installing flooring, sinks and vanities; and other finishing work. If you enjoy these type of projects and have time, please contact us! We can use semi-skilled volunteers immediately to help complete the renovation of Green Valley House.

We are blessed to be able to plan for a season of growth at Highland Retreat with the many potential uses of this space in mind. It is our hope to have the entire building fully ready in time for next year.
