Excited for 2021 Summer Camps

Excited for 2021 Summer Camps

After more than a year of not being able to host groups of unrelated minors in shared overnight accommodations, that restriction will be lifted in Virginia starting May 1st. Not only does this mean Highland will be able to host youth groups again, we’re especially excited to announce that Highland will be having summer youth camps this year! There are still special guidelines and safety regulations for youth groups and youth camps, but we’re thrilled to be able to run Highland Summer Camps in any form. Knowing there will likely be numerous changes in regulations between now and the summer, we’re waiting until mid-May to formalize a summer safety plan. Right now, we expect much smaller youth camp sizes than usual, and will therefore also be offering family experiences similar to what families enjoyed last summer. Registration for youth camps is now open, with just a small deposit required to reserve a spot.

The 2021 summer theme will be “Up for the Adventure,” with Proverbs 3:5-6 as a theme verse. This was the theme that the summer leadership team was working on last year up until camps were canceled. Revisiting those plans and leaning into the idea of following the paths God lays out for us feels even more timely than it did a year ago!

We are still in need of summer staff, and summer volunteers. Running camp under strict safety guidelines will require a higher staff-to-camper ratio; to help us add more counselors while keeping camp affordable, we hope to have dedicated volunteers in the summer kitchen each week. The online application for summer staff positions is open; people interested in volunteering during summer camp should contact Dean Williams in the youth office (email programdir@highlandretreat.org or call 540-705-0512).
