Highland Program Advisory had a strong desire to see a new camp created for older campers with some creative twists. The Peak is that camp, designed especially for campers 13-15 years old and scheduled July 24-29 to avoid school conflicts. Opportunities will be given for campers to help plan and participate in music at evening worship. Topics addressed at fireside will be relevant for teens. Special late night activities are planned and campers will enjoy sleeping in later and staying up later.
Highland will also introduce specialty tracks providing opportunity to pursue focused skills or experiences each morning. For instance, a camper choosing the sports and conditioning track can expect to participate in conditioning exercises like speed drills, road running, or lap swimming, followed by an active scrimmage in soccer, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, volleyball, or water polo. Other tracks include: Adventure Mania, Observational Art, Backcountry Navigation, Digital Photography, Survival Challenge, and Worship Leading. Each track will be overseen by a skilled volunteer within our community.
Because the teen years are so formative, the Peak will also have the support of two camp pastors: Basil Marin and Lucinda Swartzentruber. Basil will present in the evening firesides and Lucinda will mobilize campers in worship. Both will be available for leadership and camper ministry throughout the week.
Last year in the Summit, we had a very full week and still turned some away. We hope the Peak will both alleviate the pressure on the Summit while providing a new exciting and meaningful opportunity for older campers.
