Highland Retreat is a welcoming Christian camp that features a beautiful retreat setting and exciting summer youth camps. Located in northwestern Virginia, Highland serves the Shenandoah Valley, Northern Virginia, the Eastern West Virginia panhandle, and beyond.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who spread the word, contributed to our matching funds, or donated yesterday during the Great Community Give -- it was definitely a successful day!
Our final total as the giving day ended was $29,266 (nearly $5K more than our goal). That gives us some leeway if either of our water system projects ends up costing more than expected (we estimate that it will cost $14K to replace 1750 feet of unreliable water line and $11K to add a secondary filtration system). AND we should also be able to tackle our "overflow goal" of adding seating around the pool area and in the lower camp. We are excited to have the funds to pursue these projects that will positively impact our campers and guests! So once again, THANK YOU!

Today`s the day: it`s the Great Community Give! All gifts to Highland will be MATCHED today, thanks to a group of donors (including several of our board members) who wanted to help us reach our goal faster. The match went into effect at 6am, and will run until 8pm, or until we reach our $25,000 goal.

Several of our board members AND a few other generous Highland supporters have chosen to support us with gifts that will operate as matching funds as we raise money for our water system projects: replacing 1750 feet of unreliable water line and adding a secondary filtration system. The matching gifts will go into effect at 6am on Wednesday, when the Great Community Give officially starts. Last weekend, youth and youth leaders from 5 different local Mennonite churches gathered for a joint senior high youth retreat. They enjoyed lessons on the theme of peace, and also had a lot of fun together! Here are a few photos from their weekend.
We heard comments from the youth leaders that they appreciated not having the full responsibility of planning a retreat by themselves; teaming up let them share the workload, and was also a good way to make connections between different congregations. Especially for churches with smaller youth groups, having a combined youth retreat is a great idea! And we often have availability in our lodges for retreats at this time of year (later winter into early spring). 😜

The Great Community Give is just one week away! Next Wednesday (April 17), between 6am and 8pm, Highland will join many other local nonprofits for a day of online giving. There are some prizes available for the organizations based on the donations that come in on that day, which helps your gifts have a bigger impact. We are aiming for a big surge of donations in the 2-3pm hour, so if you want to set yourself an alarm so you remember to give, that`s a good time to target! On the other hand, if you know you`ll be busy on April 17, you can actually make your donation now, since early giving has already begun.

On Friday, we shared that Dogwood`s repairs have been completed. Today we want to thank the people who made it happen! There were quite a few folks, both professionals and volunteers, who contributed to repairing and improving the cottage. We missed grabbing pictures of maybe half of those people, notably the mitigation services crew, the flooring crew, and the drywall/wainscoting/trim work. But we do have pictures of: relocating the electrical box, painting the walls, installing the kitchen cabinets, fitting the microwave, and reinstalling the toilet. Whether pictured or not, we are truly grateful for each person who contributed to bringing Dogwood cottage back to life! Thank you for your hard work and expertise; Dogwood looks wonderful as a result of your efforts.
